Hawaii Five-0 Watch: Kai e' e

Hawaii Five-0 Watch: Kai e' e We got to see Hawaii Five-0 a day early this week thanks to playoff football taking place on CBS; because of this, I’d like to thank CBS for keeping my ass glued to my couch for the past five hours. Well played, CBS, well played. In other news, that is the most times I have ever typed CBS in one piece of writing - period.

While tonight’s episode was significantly dryer than I expected, the writing was significantly improved over last week’s show. The guest casting of Joel Moore (Avatar) worked beautifully as he reprised his role of Norm Spellman (effectively) as a nerdy weather service expert that still uses a pager. In fact, it appears that everyone working on the tsunami predicting team still uses pagers. Good enough for government work, right? It turns out that Moore isn’t the top banana at Tsunami H.Q. where the head honcho has gone missing right in the wake (so to speak) of a massive tsunami.

Hawaii Five-0 is, more or less, a character driven show. That’s how it gets away with standard plot devices; it distracts us with likable, if not interesting, characters. This episode put a lot of emphasis, as does the show in general, on Danno’s relationship with his daughter, Grace. The father figure is huge in this show, and it wouldn’t surprise me if that held true with the original incarnation of the show as well. From Danno and Grace to McGarrett and his father, Hawaii Five-0 puts a large emphasis on the father-child relationship in order to drive the show’s emotional front forward.

More movement was also made towards the unity of the Five-0 group, which lacked a lot of team spirit up until this point. Looking back, I realize that little effort has been made to create a great group atmosphere. Seriously, the Justice League with animated cartoon characters featured better camaraderie, and even as a kid I had the feeling that they secretly hated each other. Chin is the focal point of the togetherness of this group, not only is he the least comfortable with his new power, the money that was lost for his benefit a couple weeks ago still haunts him. Things didn’t get any better for Chin, because when Five-0 found out the tsunami was a hoax, it turned out that the money Five-0 used to ransom Chin off was the intended target. This is obviously a problem, since, you know, they already stole it themselves.

But, like any good sitcom (er, what?) everything worked out in the end. Sort of. They busted some a-hole coast guard guy (which, in Hawaii, is apparently considered a real job [just kidding, I love the coast guard!]) after he stuffed whatever money was down there into sand bags, with the plan to take them after the evacuation was cancelled. Shortly after, Five-0 was called into the governor’s office for what they assumed was going to be an arrest. But, remember what I said about the sitcom ending? Yeah, turns out all the money was present and accounted for. I know, great, right? What really sold it? The “HOLY CRAP WHAT THE EFF” look on McGarrett’s face. Seriously, that’s EXACTLY what his face looked like.

Hawaii Five-0 is back on at it’s regular date and time next week, so don’t miss out on what I’m sure will be another friggin awesome episod

If you don't get enough 'Hawaii Five-0' in the next few weeks, it's your own fault.

If you don't get enough 'Hawaii Five-0' in the next few weeks, it's your own fault.

CBS plans to air six episodes during the next 16 days.

Unfortunately, only two of them will be new but if you've wanted to catch up or just get a second look, this is your chance.

The marathon started at 6 p.m. yesterday following the NFL's AFC Championshipgame on KGMB. The battle of the bods episode with a tsunami plot line featured Kono in a bikini as she gives surfing lessons to a bare-chested Danno.

Episodes will also air at 9 p.m. Monday, Friday, Jan. 31 and Feb. 6 and 7 on KGMB.

The Feb. 7 episode will be new.

Airing so many episodes in a short period - new or not - is a sign of the show's strength, said Walea Constantinau, commissioner of the Honolulu Film Office.

"You don't get that kind of repeat play unless there is value to the show,"she said. "It shows a lot of pride and confidence in the show."

Hawaii Five-0 Makes Waves With a Sunday Episode

Jan 21, 2011 11:08 AM ET
by William Keck

There's no football in Hawaii Five-0's special Sunday post-AFC Championship Game episode, but it does start out with extreme surfing. Well, more like some extremely uncomfortable surfing as Kono (Grace Park) gives Danno (Scott Caan) board lessons so he can impress his daughter. "It's fun because Danny's obviously averse to water," says executive producer Peter Lenkov. The waves get a whole lot bigger as a major tsunami warning sends islanders evacuating to higher ground, while our team stays in town to investigate the disappearance of the head of the Tsunami Warning Center.

Reiko Aylesworth and Michelle Borth return as Malia and Catherine, the love interests of Chin Ho (Daniel Dae Kim) and McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin). "Ultimately, there's a great twist in the story that leads back to the $10 million McGarrett stole from the evidence locker to pay Chin Ho's ransom a few weeks back," Lenkov says. "That's going to come back to haunt him, but by the end of the episode you realize there's a guardian angel protecting Five-0. This is a big episode that will lead us into a fun mystery." Sounds like a touchdown!

Hawaii Five-0 airs Sunday at 10/9c on CBS.

McGarrett caught with his pants down!

McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) and his girlfriend Catherine (recurring guest Michelle Borth) are sort of literally caught with their pants down when the warning hits, then play a one-upping game in swapping information about the situation. For McGarrett, this is flirting.

Exclusive: Hawaii Five-0 Adds Cast Member

Exclusive: Hawaii Five-0 Adds Cast Member
By: Nellie Andreeva

Larisa Oleynik is joining the cast of the freshman drama Hawaii Five-0, TVLine has learned exclusively.

On CBS’s reboot of the classic cop show, Oleynik will play Jessica Kaye, an ex-CIA Analyst and Harvard graduate with a degree in Political Science and a Masters in Global Security and Intelligence Studies who is fresh off the plane from Langley, Virginia.

Her purpose in Hawaii? To assist Five-0 in the pursuit of Steve McGarrett’s arch nemesis, Wo Fat (Iron Chef America‘s Mark Dacascos). Jessica has a personal stake in the manhunt since Wo Fat was responsible for the murder of her fiancé, a well respected CIA field agent.

Oleynik’s role is recurring for the remainder of this season, with an option to become a series regular come Season 2. A onetime recurring player on NBC’s 3rd Rock from the Sun, she most recently guest-starred on AMC’s Mad Men as Ken Cosgrove’s fiancée.

HAWAII FIVE-0 “He Kane Hewa’ Ole” Review

HAWAII FIVE-0 “He Kane Hewa’ Ole” Season 1 Episode 14 –

Is it just me or do all significant conversations between Danny and McGarrett happen in the car? Because it’s they sure had a doozy in this episode.

Danny put McGarrett on the spot, accusing him of going soft whenever a case involves a father and son. It’s very true but what’s also true is the fact that Danny himself responds when the case involves a father and daughter. In fact I’m surprised that McGarrett didn’t call Danny on that, since it happened again, not too long after the car talk.

At first I thought that Danny was right. When a case involves a father and son, McGarrett does go soft, but only for a little and only when taking the father’s (or son’s) feelings into account. Anyone who saw the final scene (you know, the one where McGarrett told Danny to get that woman away from him), knows that he doesn’t only go soft. That look in his eyes was anything but soft.

The other thing I thought at first was that while McGarrett goes soft over father-and-son cases, it seemed like Danny went the opposite – he became hard as nails with the father-and-daughter cases. Again though, I realized I couldn’t put such a simple label on it. Danny does get tougher but he too can be softened by the dewy eyes of a father with a missing daughter.

What did I discover after all this deliberation? It’s simple really – both guys react to the cases that affect their hearts and it simply ramps up their emotions. So if McGarrett does have a soft underbelly (which he know he must, somewhere under that macho man façade), he shows it only during those cases. Likewise Danny is the more analytical of the two, but if a case hits him just right, he’ll go off just as insanely as McGarrett does.

My final conclusion is that this was agreat episode which really got me thinking about both of the boys, and since that’s an activity I enjoy immensely, I enjoyed the ep just as much.

My favorite bits..

Thinking that there might have been a touch of truth behind Chin’s “joke” about wishing he’d gotten into another line of work.

Wincing how many times the car flipped.

Being really, really glad we didn’t see what was in that box. Judging by Kono’s face, I don’t think I wanted to see it.

Danny claiming that the courtesy knock went out with things like the bro-hug.

The way that Danny giggled when he said the thing in the box didn’t look like a master cylinder.

McGarrett and Danny discussing ChiPs. Oh Danny, I hate to break it to you but you are SOOO John and McGarrett is so Eric Estrada. That’s okay though because I always found John to be cute one on that show.

Groaning when McGarrett took the head out of the box – so much for thinking we weren’t going to have to see it. Ick.

Giggling when Max referred to the head as the “smaller victim.” I know it was wrong, but it was pretty damn funny.

Finding out that McGarrett can speak Mandarin.

McGarrett knowing when the father had seen enough and silently asking Max to cover up the body again.

Thinking that Danny hit the nail on the head when he spotted that McGarrett went goofy any time they had a case involving a father. McGarrett only proved it when he got mad about it.

Wondering what Chin’s issue was at the hospital. I was thinking it was that he had a problem with doctors.. up until his ex fiancé walked out of the elevator.

Danny flying out of the car before McGarrett had a chance to stop it. Oh yeah! Loving me some badass Danny. Hope he doesn’t mess up his knee doing stunts like that though.

Danny piecing together everything in the apartment to figure out that the daughter was actually in cahoots with her “kidnappers.”

McGarrett telling Danny to get that woman away from him. Actually I was afraid for her safety about three seconds before that, after catching a very scary look in his eyes.

McGarrett handing the grandfather a letter saying that he and his family were going to be US citizens. Aw.

McGarrett finally getting his master cylinder. Another aw.

The entire argument that the boys had while watching the ChiPs marathon.

The boys suddenly both wanting to be John as soon as Kono said he was hot. LOL! And yay for her agreeing with me.

Hawaii Five-0 - Casting News - JoJo to Guest

Hawaii Five-0 - Casting News - JoJo to Guest
Pop singer JoJo has been cast in a special episode of CBS's Hawaii Five-0 that will air after the AFC Championship game on Sunday, Jan. 23. The 20-year-old will play Courtney Russell, the daughter of a Tsunami Warning Center scientist who goes missing on the eve of a big storm hitting the Honolulu coast.

The episode will also feature Bones favorite Joel David Moore as Sheldon Tunney, the missing scientist's second in command. I'm hearing as well that the series is getting closer to casting its fifth series regular team member, likely a woman, to begin shooting at month's end for an on-air debut in March.
