Exclusive Hawaii Five-0 First Look: Why Is Chin Ho in Prison?

Exclusive Hawaii Five-0 First Look: Why Is Chin Ho in Prison? Jan 18, 2013 02:23 PM ET by Adam Bryant
On Sunday's special post-AFC Championship airing of Hawaii Five-0, Chin Ho Kelly will live out every cop's nightmare: being stuck in prison with the people you've put behind bars. Hawaii Five-0 boss on turning over the crime-solving to the fans "Cops that serve time in here don't do too well," warns a prison guard who's "helping" Chin (Daniel Dae Kim) find answers. Based on the exclusive first look at the episode below, that's a huge understatement. "We really wanted to put [Chin] in a situation where he'd have to face his sins," executive producer Peter Lenkov previously told TVGuide.com. "Chin Ho was considered a dirty cop, so we put him in a situation where some people feel he belongs in prison. There are people who want to kill him because he put them in there. We're playing with scenes of retribution and revenge. It's life or death and it's a really good ride." Although Chin wakes up inside the prison with no recollection of how he got there, things begin to become a bit clearer when he crosses paths with Det. Kaleo (Jason Scott Lee), the former Ochoa Cartel mole inside the Honolulu Police Department. As for why Chin's being punished? "Somebody ... wants you to suffer before you die," Kaleo says. Winter TV: Get the scoop on your favorite returning shows Will Chin make it out alive? Watch his first heart-pumping fistfight in the clip below to find out. Hawaii Five-0 Boss on Turning Over the Crime-Solving to the Fans

Today's News: Our Take Hawaii Five-0 Boss on Turning Over the Crime-Solving to the Fans Jan 14, 2013 10:25 AM ET by Adam Bryant
Hawaii Five-0 Say aloha to stunts: Hawaii Five-0 is pulling out all the stops this week. First, during its normal Monday airing (10/9c, CBS), the cop drama will attempt something new for prime-time television: The show will allow viewers to choose the culprit in real time, thus deciding the ending of the show. Executive producer Peter Lenkov gives credit to one of his actors for inspiring the idea. "It really started with Masi Oka, who called me up pitching an episode with multiple endings," Lenkov tells TVGuide.com. "When I talked to CBS, they already had a similar idea in the works —they had the technology to do it, and they were just deciding which show to do it with. When I brought up the idea, they saw it as perfect timing." The episode finds the Five-0 team investigating the murder of a professor, a crime with three suspects: the professor's boss, his teaching assistant and a student the professor busted for cheating. After each suspect's motives are revealed, viewers can go to CBS.com and/or Twitter to choose who they believe the culprit to be. The votes will be tallied immediately and the most popular ending will be broadcast. (Viewers will be able to vote during the broadcasts on both the East and the West Coasts; all three endings will be available on CBS.com after the show airs.) Executive story editor Dave Wolkove, who wrote the episode, says crafting the hour was a unique challenge. "We always like to have a pool of credible suspects," he says. "In any episode, we want the audience to be guessing who the killer is. The challenge here was seeing that through to the ending and having all three remain credible suspects." Although the episode is a departure for the show, it will still provide character moments that are part of the season's story, Lenkov says. The episode will again feature Sang Min (Will Yun Lee), who has an exchange with Kono (Grace Park), and will introduce Danny's nephew. "His sister sent him to Danny [Scott Caan] for a scared straight experiment," Lenkov says. "He's been f---ing up back home and is very misguided and needs a real father figure in his life. She sends him to Danny hoping her brother can straighten him out." Six days after the choose-your-own adventure episode, Five-0 will also air an event episode after the AFC Championship game on Sunday. The episode, which finds Chin Ho (Daniel Dae Kim) mysteriously locked in a maximum security prison, will feature several unreleased songs from a new Jimi Hendrix album. "The music really lends itself to the particular episode," Lenkov says. "It's a high-energy episode, so a lot of the guitar licks and the solos really sound like Jimi scored the episode for us. It's an event episode. It's very big, and when I started playing tracks against the picture, it felt like a great marriage." As for Chin, the mystery of why he ended up in prison harkens back to his past mistakes. "We really wanted to put him in a situation where he'd have to face his sins," Lenkov says. "Chin Ho was considered a dirty cop, so we put him in a situation where some people feel he belongs in prison. There are people who want to kill him because he put them in there. We're playing with scenes of retribution and revenge. It's life or death and it's a really good ride." And during his time inside, Chin, whose wife was murdered in the season premiere, has to protect a woman he meets (guest star Lindsay Price). Sparks may fly, but Lenkov says their encounter is significant on multiple levels. "Anytime you go through a traumatic experience with someone, there is definitely a connection with them," he says. "There's chemistry between those two, but it's not sexual or romantic. It's just them needing each other in the face of adversity and the danger their both thrown into. I think you'll see at the end of the episode that what is there between those two is hope. For Chin Ho, maybe a little bit of that cloud is lifted. You're going to leave that episode thinking, 'I would like to see more of them.' That's the goal: Would you like to see Chin Ho happy again?" As for the future of the show, Lenkov says he'd love to have the "viewers' choice" ending be an annual event. "It's like 3D in movies: How do you get the audience engaged in TV when there is so much to watch out there?" Lenkov says. "This is one idea that I think networks are thinking of, which is making shows more interactive. If it works, I'd love to be able to perfect it. It's a little bit of an experiment. It's uncharted territory. So, I'd like the opportunity to do it again to perfect the storytelling science of it. We think we did a good job, but it could become sort of a staple of this show — a fun thing for the audience to look forward to each year." Hawaii Five-0 Boss Explains Putting The Drama In Viewers’ Hands For Voter-Friendly Jan. 14 Episode

Hawaii Five-0 Boss Explains Putting The Drama In Viewers’ Hands For Voter-Friendly Jan. 14 Episode First Published: January 10, 2013 3:56 PM EST
HONOLULU, HAWAII -- “Hawaii Five-0” has had some fun over the years — putting Alex O’Loughlin’s McGarrett in an MMA ring, dressing up Masi Oka’s Max as Danny Zuko, and of course all of those “carguments,” but in next week’s episode, producers are handing over the storyline to the viewers, who can pick their own ending to the show. “Masi Oka called me up out of the blue and said, ‘Hey, it would be great if we can do an episode that has multiple endings. It’s the format of the future,’” Executive Producer Peter Lenkov told AccessHollywood.com of how the twist on the drama’s upcoming January 14 episode took shape. “When I brought it up to CBS… they said, ‘We’ve been thinking about doing it also.’ And it seemed to be like the right time to do it.” Here’s how it will work: Kicking off at “Hawaii Five-0’s” usual time of 10 PM ET/PT, the episode will find the team investigating the death of an O’ahu State University professor. Three potential culprits will emerge — #theBoss, #theTA and #theStudent. After their potential motives for murder are revealed, voting begins on CBS.com and Twitter. Fans on the social networking site can type in the hash tag of their selection and Tweet it out to cast their vote. Whichever suspect gets the most votes will have their ending scene played on the show – a potentially different ending for the East, Central and Pacific Time Zone broadcasts. Despite his involvement in the unique, viewer-friendly concept, Oka won’t be in the final scene where the killer is revealed. “Here’s the beauty of Masi — it’s not about him,” Lenkov said of the actor, who plays Dr. Max Bergman. “He really does genuinely care about the show, so if he pitches something, it’s not always about his character or his storyline or about him. It’s about really about the show.” Instead, it will be Scott Caan’s Danny “Danno” Williams, O’Loughlin’s McGarrett and Daniel Dae Kim’s Chin Ho Kelly, who solve the case by finding the killer. “In this episode, Danny has his nephew in town, so our heroes have to go off island to solve the case and it’s really McGarrett and Chin Ho, who go off to do the physical take down,” Lenkov explained. “Danny’s sort of saddled, he’s got [this] ball and chain — his nephew — with him, so he’s gotta stay on the island and together… the four of them solve the case, but McGarrett and Chin do the physical work.” Asked if he’s worried about the moment when, after the votes are tallied, someone has to plop in the chosen scene in real-time, Lenkov admitted he is a little concerned. “Yep,” he laughed. “It’s not just this. I’m worried about everything. I’m worried about every second of every show. Look, besides the logistics, besides the sort of like, ‘Are we gonna be able to actually do this and somebody’s going to have to hit a switch somewhere and put the right ending on,’ I’m also I’m hoping that the audience finds that it was worth the ride… and they got to play along a little bit. That’s the stuff that’s really important to me — if the audience is satisfied and they feel like that this is something that if it works, they want to see it again — not necessarily with our show, but maybe it could be part of [a] format down the road.” For fans whose suspect selection doesn’t turn out to be the culprit in their time zone, CBS.com will have all the alternate endings online after the broadcasts. “Hawaii Five-0” airs Mondays at 10 ET/PT on CBS. -- Jolie Lash http://www.accesshollywood.com/hawaii-five-0-boss-explains-putting-the-drama-in-viewers-hands-for-voter-friendly-jan-14-episode_article_74757
